I think this is a disgraceful move by the coalition. Thanks to all the WNC for their support.

It is very sad that the WNC will be closed down at the end of this year. Within the immigration and asylum working group in relation to Scotland, we have lost an opportunity to put our women migrants’ issues on the national agenda, issues such as the impact of the point based system, family’s reunification, work place abuse and gender discrimination that is on a world wide based. With 49.7% of global migrants been women, losing this voice will means that women migrants are losing their voices in this government. This can only mean that they are even lower down in this government agenda.

I am angered by the recent Government decision to close the WNC. Having been an employee of the WNC and having remained in the women’s sector subsequently I believe the WNC has played an invaluable role in bringing women’s voices to Government.

Much of the work they do is unsung. For example, committing to numerous outreach events across all the devolved nations, working consciously to represent women from all ackgrounds and building and sustaining expert working groups on aspects as diverse as migration and asylum, sexual violence and CEDAW.

The WNC has been the soil from which many strong women’s networks have grown, such as the End Violence Against Women Coalition (EVAW) and the Muslim Women’s Network. Given that the WNC has over 600 partners, including organisations representing thousands of women across the UK, the tiny budget it survived on represents significant value for money.

The closure of the WNC sends a damning message from the coalition Government about its commitment to ensuring that UK women’s voices are included in Government policy making.

Moreover, it shows a lack of concern for the specific barriers that women face in ensuring that their views are represented and integrated into laws and policy.

The Scottish Women’s Convention have been very proud to be a partner organisation of the Women’s National Commission. Since its inception the WNC have been tireless in their efforts to ensure every issue important to and more specifically, having a direct impact on women, has been given an influential nationwide voice. The lost of the WNC is a real blow to the women’s movement in the UK and sadly the decision taken by the Coalition Government will result in a backward step in the drive towards achieving equality for women in the UK. The Chair of the Scottish Women’s Convention, Agnes Tolmie said “For the last 40 years the Women’s National Commission have provided a focus for women in the UK and ensured their voices are heard at the highest levels of Government.
The abolition of the WNC will leave a huge gap in the battle to combat the numerous inequalities that women continue to suffer economically, socially and politically.
This is a hugely disappointing decision for women in the UK.”
